Squire Thornton Tries Lawsuit
Squire Thornton had a case in his court Tuesday that was without parralel in the Indiana decisions, but found some similitude is decision in neighboring states. Pat Halligan was the defendant, Guy Wilson the plaintiff, and the ownership of two young calves' the issue. Halligan Bros, sold a tea* of horses to a man Schmidt, for 1200, and took a mortgage on the horses and [on [two cows. Schmidt sold the cows to Wilson, neglecting to state that they were mortgaged. Schmidt then skipped out with the horsey and is thought to be in Illinois. Both Schmidt and Wieson lived over near Francesville, and}*when the Halligans learned that Schmidt hid skipped, Pat went over and hunted up the cows, "which now had calvts by their sides, and brought them back to Rensselaer. Wilson sought to replevin them and the trial was in an effort to do so, but Squire Thornton held that Halligan was within hi* bounds when he took (he calves and decided that they were by right nis property.
