A CRIMINAL ASSAULT ATTEMPTED

A villianions attempt at) a criminal assault was made here Tue Ed ay afternoon, the intended victim be ing a nearly blind maiden woman, the daughter and house-keeper of F. M. Gobel, commonly called Col. Gobel and who lives north of the depot, and on the north gravel road, and just outside the Rensselaer corporation The Colontl himselft had gone fishing leaving the daughter, Ellen, at home alone. Sometime this afternoon as she sat in the front room she heard some . one in the kitchen but thought it was her ff ther came back from fishing and did not investigate. Instead however it was a stranger who came into the room where she was and without any words seized here and threw her on a bed. She screamed loudly and Mrs. Harry Swartzell, whose home is only a few Btep away, ran in and the man ran out and left across a cornfield. He was described as a large man. The city Marshal was notified by telephone and he and Deputy Sheriff Joe O’Connor started after him in a bujjgy. They returned after concluding the man had get away on the southbound local, but later accompanied also by the sheriff resumed their search, in a dray wagon. Miss Gobel seems to have suffered no injuries worse than fright and nervous shock, from her experience.
