BITTEN BY A RATTLESNAKE

One of those now, happily, rare misfortunes, a bite by a rattlesnake, occurred in this connty Monday afternoon. The victim was Mrs. Silas Tombs, an aged widow who' in Barkley township. It occurred about 1:30 o’clock while she was boeing melons, the place of the bite beiDg on the back of one of her hands. Owing to difficulty in getting telephone communication to town and the family’s own deliberate motions, she was not reached by a physician until evening, by which time the hand was swollen enormously and of a very bad color, and the victim herself very sick. T..e swollen hand was cut open through ihe wound and given the necessary local treatment, as well as internal remedies administered, with the result that the physician is confident of ultimate recovery Mrs. Tombs is about 70 years old. ' The snake was killed and is said to have been a pretty large one. Several other rattlers have been killed in that vicinity this season.
