; Work on the new wards at Longcliff hospital has been stopped. The appropriation has been exhausted and their yet remains six weeks work to complete the buildings. The appropriation was SBO,OOO. Every penny of this sum has been expended and the buildings must yet be painted, decorated and furnished. Ten tl ousand dollars additional is need and Superintendent Rogers has set about to secure that sum it possible. It is imperative that the wards be completed. The institution is taxed beyond capacity and a half hundred insane patients are being held in jail in the different towns and oities thruout northern Indiana. The latter are unable to gain admittance to Longcliff, to which institution they have been committed, oecause of the crowded conditions. The two new ward will accomodate about two hundred additional patients. It was expected, that they would be finished before this, but unfavorable weather delayed. The management is powerless to complete the unless the governor will come to the rescue. The matter has been presented to him and he has been urged to allow the use of a part of the contingent fund. He is well aware of the crowded condition of the place, and it is hoped he will act in the direction indicated.
