HERO CREEPS THROUGH FIRE. Telegraph Operator Sends Message for Help with Fingers Bnrned. "Suffering intense agony from bums he received through the explosion of an immense tank of oil, Cash Alien, 28 years old, saved the village of Griffiths from complete destruction by fire at midnight Saturday night by crawling to the Brie depot and sending in a telegraph call for help to Huntington and Laporte. Alien is the only telegraph operator in Griffiths, and is in charge of the Erie station, as well as of the Standard Oil Company’s tariks and pipe lines at that point. Through the prompt arrival of aid from the neighboring towns, Laporte sending its fire department, the homes of 500 residents of the village were saved from the fire, although fifty acres was burned over and $50,000 damage done before the firemen got the fire under control. The Erie operator is the hero of the town, and the tvhole village is enthusiastic in his praise. —. r ;- - WOMAN RECEIVER IS SUCCESS, Mrs Knox Brlnga Ladoga Bank Company Out of Trouble. Mrs. James O. Knox, who received the appointment some time ago as receiver for the Bank of Ladoga and the Hoosier Veneer Company, is making a creditable record as manager of the trust and bids fair to bring both institutions safely out of trouble. Every depositor in the bank Ms been paid in Full out of the earnings of the veneer works and the assets of the bank, and the former is now on its feet again and is being carried on in the interest of stockholders.
LIVES 22 RAYS UPON WATER, Belleville Doctor Lose* a Found a Day. After living for twenty-two days on water, Dr. I. L. Earles of Belleville, who started his long fast for health reasons, declares he is in fine condition and has not yet felt the pangs of hunger. He offers to submit to any test of endurance which may be proposed. His weight has been reduced from ISI pounds to 168%. The water he. drinks is double distilled. He declares that when he gets hungry he will break his fast with a baby food diet. ' MAY IMPEACH FOR SHORTAGE. Missing; Official of Indiana Municipal League Faces Punishment. There is serious talk in Richmond of impeachment proceedings against John F. TaggSlVcity clerk, as the result of an investigation 'by the Indiana Municipal League and the that as secretary he is short $227. BOY DROWNS» JOKE TO MOTHER. South Bend Woman at Ftrat Believe* Story o* Death Untrue. Although notified that her son, Alexander Teyer, had been drowned while bathing in the St. Joseph river at South Bend, the mother of the young man regarded the story as a joke, and not until afternoon did she place faith in the report. She then appealed to the police and the river is now being dragged. The body of Prof. Hershal Eaglebarger, drowned while attempting to save John Lay, a student, has not been recovered. Curses the Court) Pays a Fine. For cursing the court, or** rather Edward Jenkins, the representative of the United States federal court, William L. Cherry, an East Chicago contractor, was fined $38.97 by Judge A. B. Anderson in Indianapolis. Jenkins is receiver for the East Chicago Water IVorks Company. Cherry tapped a main. Jenkins ordered the water shut off and the expensive language followed. Attempted Suicide by Drovrain* Alfred Krone, 30 years old, a cripple, while despondent, attempted to end his life by drowning at Richmond. He walked into the river in full view of hundreds of workmen at the piano factory. The alarm was sounded and he was rescued without difficulty, although in a greatly weakened condition. He will recover.
Within Onr Border*. Iloscoe Moguel of New Castle has begun suit against tlfk Indianapolis and Eastern Traction Company for $2,500 for the loss of a toe in an accident. Miss Mary Hodge, 20 years old, while on her way home from church in Evansville, was overcome by heat and died within two hours. Several prostrations occurred. Lawrence Cameron Hull, aged 20 years, grandson of Dr. N. S. Darling of Laporte, and the youngest graduate of Michigan university, has been awarded the Cecil lihodes scholarship, with an annual endowment of $1,500, and will leave In September for a term of four years. Walter Latham and Miss Nellie Josephine Byvert, both of Posey county, eloped to Carmi, 111., and were married in the calaboose.
