Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 39, Number 82, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 18 June 1907 — Failed to Elect Superintendent. [ARTICLE]

Failed to Elect Superintendent.

The republican trustees .of Newton county after balloting without result tor a week in the Newton caunty superintendent contest, decided they would adjourn and did so. As there are an equal number of republicans and democrats there was not a quorum left for business and the democrats could nut transact business, so they left also. Auditor Purkey is a democrat and if the republicans were to decide on one candidate, thereby causing a tie vote, Purkey would cast his vote for Prof. Will Schanlaub, of the Morocco schools, and formerly from the time of his birth of Rensselaer. But the republicans have two candidates, each receiving some of the republican votes, and as the republicans are now in possession of the office and will continue to be so long as the deadlock continues, it is not probable they will take any chances in the election of a democrat, and the democratic trustees are so determined to stick to their candidates that there will be no weakening on their part. The auditor has called the trustees to reconvene next Wednesday, but the Enterprise of that town thinks it quite improbable that the republican trustees will respond.
