Fire Burning One Hundred Years.
The Chequers Inn, Osmotherley, Is a relic of the old coaching days, but it is now famed for its fire, which has never been out for more than 100 years and over which griddle cakes are baked. This huge fire is kept continually burning by peat or turf from the Yorkshire moors. An excellent tea is provided for visitors, the chief dainty being the griddle cakes. The peat glows like red embers on a red tiled floor, the griddle being suspended from a bar above, the whole looking most quaint and picturesque. The exterior of the Inn is most unpretentious and Old World looking, as it nestles alone on the Yorkshire wolds.
