GEO. E. MARSHALL’S INVESTMENT.
Republican Editor For 26 Years Buys Fine Fruit Farm 11 Oregon. George E. Marshall for the past 26 years editor aud proprietor of the Rensselaer Republican, and who some months ago contracted the sale of this paper to Dr. I. M. "Washburn and Geo. H. Healey, has been in Oregon for the past tour or five weeks, and has invested in a fine iruit farm at the city of Medford, which is 341 miles south of Portland and 431 miles north of San Francisco, and within 12 miles of Ashland, where Rev. J. T. Abbott, now of Portland, was for some years located. Mr. Marshall’sinvestment was made after a careful investigation of that country and of its wonderful fruit growing qualities and this investment was determined upon only after fie had assured himself that it was the best investment in that country. Of his investment the Portland Oregonian says: “The record sale for Rogue River Valley orchard property was made last week when the beautiful E. J. DeHart orchard near this city was purchased by G. E. Marshall, of Rensselaer, Ind., for $33,000. “This sale demonstrates that the value es-orchard properties in the; Bogue Bi ver Valley is rapidly i«creasing, and it is « foregone eonctastoß that Southern Oregon lands wiH, in the near future, bring the same prices that prevail in the Hood River Valley and Yakima countiy. “Consideringthe fact that this season’s fruit was withheld by Mr. DeHart, and that its estimated value is $ 10,000, the sale of the orchard was in reality on a 143,000
basia Mid as the acreage totals but 76 I<B aeres, the price may be estimated at $563.50 per acre, which 1 is the highest price per acre as well' as the'largest sale for an orchard •ever nude in Southern Oregon. “Among those who are thoroly familiar with conditions in the Bogue River Valley it is coneeded that Mr. Marshall has made a splendid purchase, for not only has fete obtained one of the most beautiful homes in this delightful valley, but he has also become possessed of a3O per. -cent dividend paying proposition which should increase to 49 per cent on the original invest' meat when the entire orchard comes into bearing?' The Medford paper after describing the property and relating the sale of the same, concludes by saying, “The DeHart home is one of the best appointed in the vicinity of Medford and would not have been disposed of but for the fact that the family prefer to reside in Berkley, as the younger members of the family are attending school there.” Mr, Marshall will return to Rensselaer the last of this month, bringing with him his daughter, Miss Lucile, who has been attending Pomona College at Claremont, Cal., for the past year. By the terms of the contract for the sale ot this paper he will continue as its editor and proprietor until Oct. Ist, after which time it will pass to the control of its new owners, and will be edited and managed by George H. Healey, who has for the past eighteen months been the partner of Mr; Marshall and who is conducting the business during his absence.
