African Buffalo War Dram.
Perhaps the most patient buffalo under a beating to be found in the world is the one captured by an expedition of the gudan government sent against ■ the Niam-Niam tribes, living iu the Bahr-el Ghazal province, in the center of Africa, says the New York Tribune. These tribes are cannibals. Under Yambio, their sultan, they had been causing the government much trouble. As a result of the expedition the sultan was killed and his war buffalo captured. This buffalo was carved from a single piece of wood and was over ten feet long, four and a half feet high and four feet wide. The truthful observer would have great difficulty in describing the thing as an -accurate representation of a buffalo. The body was hollowed out by means of a narrow slit on the top and, considering the primitiuie tools of the natives, must have taken many mouths to make. It was intended as a war drum and was carried about by ten men. A practical American would ask whether it was worth the trouble. Its beating did not prevent its owner from losing his life.
