Not A Good Foundation.
Monttcello Democrat: The Fowler newspapers are just dow engaged in enlightening the world as to the effects of knocking the saloons out of that place. The Fowler Republican, while admitting that saloons are indefensible from a moral standpoint, claims that the business of Fowler has [been hurt since the saloons have [gone. On the other hand the bowler Leader and the Benton ReIview, the latter the Democratic paper, both challenge the trnthlulness hfthe R-pubFcan’s statement; both fclaim that the general business ol Fowler has not been hurt at all by ■he absence of saloons, and brand Ihe Republicau as the “whiskey Irgau.” I Reusselaer papers have taken it ■p and all agree that business in Rensselaer is as good or better than lb was with saloons. Their princi ftal annoyance being the bootleggers ■rjm Roselawn and Ttiayer. I As to Monticello our existence as ■ dry town has as yet been >oo Biort to speak from experience, but |e do net anticipate any injury to fcgitimate business. The DemoBat has too high an opinion of the Brmers of the country tributary to Monticello to believe that they will Bfnse to come to the town to trade Bere because they can not fill their ■ides iull of booze every time they nine in, and we know the women le not going to boycott Monticello Because they cannot get something B diink here. ■ a substantial Carroll county farBer, in discussing the matter Tues Biy, said that “a town whose foun■ition was a beer keg ought to die.” We don’t believe Mouticello’s busiIm rested on any such foundation Rnce we don’t believe the closing I saloons will hurt business at all.
