SUIT OVER BURIED TREASURE. Up and Appropriated $30,000. * The case of Walter Carson, as administrator against Jacob Zeigler has been resumed in the Superior Court in Evailsville. Carson is suing for the recovery of money which belonged to the mother and brother of Zffigier, who died three years ago. A short time before the moth-* er and brother died they came to Evansville And drew about 130.000 out of the banks, and it is supposed they buried it* in the ground on the Zeigler farm. A few weeks ago Zeigler sent a package of money, $2,000 in all, that had been buried in the earth, to the Treasury Department at Washington, and got new bills for that amount. Zeigler clnims the money belonged to his wife, who had buried it, and that his son dug it "up. Carson alleges Zeigler dug up the $30,000 and converted it to his own use. ■- ■ . - - JAIL FOR CLEVER SWINDLER. Chica&o Crook Given Lons Prison Sentence In Indiana. Edward Nathan Weil, alias E. N. Wilson, fine looking and well dressed, one of the cleverest swindlers and forgers ever captured in Indiana, was sentenced at La Porte to serve _an_ indeterminate term of two to fourteen years in the Indiana State prison and was fined SI,OOO for •passing forged checks, to which he signed the name of Marcus Ileuocb, a La Porte merchant. Weil has served two terms in Joliet, nine years altogether, having been sent both times from Chicago, the first time for larceny and the second for working a confidence game. Weil claims relationship with a prominent Jewish family in Chicago and New York. _ SHIELDS MAN WHO SHOT HIM. Police Can Not Piwwrate Cltimen Who Tried to Kill Invader. Although made a cripple lot life by a bullet fired by his former friend Frank Howland, Charles Carroll refuses to charge the former with attempted murder and the police are powerless to act against Howland. The officers allege that Carroll ruined Howland’s home and claim that Mrs. Howland confessed her part of the nearly fatal tragedy. Carroll, however, refuses to stain the woman’s reputation and advances the plea that Howland shot him by mistake, thinking him a burglar. The men reside at Goshen.
MYSTERY IN GIRL’S DEATH. Evansville Yonns Woman Found with Bnllet in Heart. Miss Zella Runyon of Shelbyville, aged 19, is dead from a bullet wound <n the heart. Mystery surrounds the affair. The gun is said to have been found in a dresser. The names of two lovers are coupled with the tragedy. The coroner is - ... M The girl was a charming blond and was in high spirits an hour before her death. Wabash College Names Head. At a special meeting of the Wabash college trustees in Crawfordsville Dr. George L. Mackintosh was elected president to fill the vacancy caused by the death of the late Dr. W. P. Kane. The new president is a Wabash alumnus and for the last sixteen years has been pastor of the Fourth Presbyterian church at Indianapolis. Stabbed, bnt Is Silent. “The best friend I ever had did it and he tried to kill me, but I will not tell on him,” was all the police could get from Harvey Porter, who was mysteriously stabbed in Wabash. He will recover, but is in a serious condition.
No Extra Session. Gov. Ilanly has signed the general appropriation bill. The signing of the bill settles the fact that there will be no extra session of the Legislature. Baby I" Drowned in a Bucket. The 18-months-old child of Edward Ramsey of I’oseyville, while playing near a large candy bucket filled with water, fell in and was drowned. Thrown from Wasron and Killed. Fleming Handy, 33, of Evansville, was thrown from a wagon and instantly killed by the wheels passing over his neck. Y. M. C. A. Opens *75,000 Home. The Young Men’s Christian Association dedicated in South Bend the $75,000 home presented by George Wyman. Robbers Blow Dank Safe. Robbers blew the safe of the First Natioua' bank in Batesville, but got only a snmli sura. The robbers escaped. Brief State Happenings. Mrs. George Smith of Wabash, apparently in good health, dropped dead while conversing with her family after eating a hearty meal. Because the proposed Coliseum at Indianapolis will not be built in time for holding the saengerfest this year, the event has been postjioned to 1908. If Virgil A. Geiger, editor of the Churubusco Truth, takes charge of the postoffice of his town of which he has just been appointed potmnster it will be at the,risk of losing his life. Threatening letters of all sorts have been sent to him. His barn was burned since his appointment and his relatives have suffered also and been warned that Geiger would b« killed within six weeks of his taking office. Laughlin Brothers of Linton have bought 160 acres of land, two miles southwest of Lyons, on Bee Hunter marsh, from T. E. Harris for sllO an acre The land is tiled, but otherwise unimproved. The fast passenger train on the Monon railroad between Chicago and Louisville was wrecked near Fair Qgks, every coach but the chair ear leaving the track. The engine, baggage car and express car rolled down an embankment, but the passenger coach maintained an upright position on the fill. Every coach was well filled with passengers, but. strange to say, no one was killed and none fatally hurt.
