Had A Small Fire.
The fire alarm sounded about 1.30 o’clock Tuesday p. m., the occasion being a small fire in a small stable at the rear of T. W. Grant’s tenant property, the former Wm. Greenfield place on Clark street, and in ? pile of wild hay adjoining. The stable is ordinarily inhabited by a team of mules belonging to Oscar Smith, renter of the property but just then they were out doing some work, so there was little or nothing of value in the stable, and itself was worth not more thin $25. The fire company made a quick run and tho too late to save the stable, they did save a large and valuable barn across the alley, belonging to Sylvester Gray. Chester Zea, the driver of the city fire team, was up near Nelse Randle's place, putting in a brjdge, and tho the team made a splendid run for the engine house, Joe Jackson had too big a start with his hack team, and beat Chester to it, by three blocks, and so got to haul out the engine. It was the first fire since Barney Woodworth’s barn burned last August. The fire is supposed to have started from the very common cause of children playing with matches.
