A USEFUL SOVEREIGN.
Fat and Jolly Carlos of Portugal la a Busy Man. King Catlos of Portugal conveys by his appearance the impression of a jovial, pleasure-loving gourmand, entirely' Riven over to the pleasures of the table, all the time from which he can spare beingik voted to that particularly luxurious form of sport known as battue shooting where the game is driy«'n to the-muzzle of- the gun. Yet no impression is more incorrect, and the fact that Dom Carlos has a healthy appetite, a huge avoirdpois and is content with nothing less than lio to 40 strong cigars a day. does not prevent ins being one of the most useful sovereigns in Christendom. Passionately fond of the sea and of everything pertaining thereto, he has applied himself to the study of oceanography with much more thoroughness and sincerity than TYinL'e Albert of Monaco. For, whereas the latter cjontents himself with employing scientists and with exploiting their lore for his personal glory. King Carlos is his own scientist, and pursues his researches himself, n'ot with any idea of fame, but jnainly for. the purpose of promoting the welfare of the large ixipulation along the storm bound coast of Portugal that derives its livelihood from fishing.
No one in the kingdom i assesses a more extensive acquaintance of the migratory habits of the various fish that figure in the fishing industry of Portugal. Indeed, the King's knowledge at everything pertaining to fishes and their habits, not only along the Portuguese eoa.4.but also the eastern portion of the Atlantib ocean, is something phenomenal, and. besides inventing a number of new and most useful appliances for the fishing industry, be likewise spends each year large sums of money in placing them at the disposal of the various communities of fishermen along the Coast.
