College fraternities Not Good In High Schools.
Nothing could be worse for a high school iu a small town like ours than establishing fraternities and sororities iu it. It will at once divide the school into mutually unfriendly classes, on one |side being those who can and will go into the orders, an 1 those who cant, or do not wish to, or whose parents will not permit to. Those who are in will consider themselves “the whole cheese” as the saying is, especially in social matters, and look down upon and largely refuse to associate with, those who are out The frats will thus become puffed up and snobbish while the outs will be under a constant state of humiliation and exclusion. And in order to save their children from this social disadvantage many parents who can not rightly afford the greatly increased expense, will still do so for the sake of their children. And as for the country people who now send their children to our high school in such large numbers, many will just as far as they can conveniently, withdraw their favor and send their children to schools which are not afflicted by the fraternity disease. That the societies will also greatly interfere with the legitimate school work of their members there is also no question.
