Fifty-One Years Ago. JASPER BANNER, SEPT. 13, 1855. The Democratic county convention was held on Sept. 8. After it assembled the Democrats present from each township selected the delegates for their township, a recess of 15 minutes being taken for the purpose. G. W. Spitler was chairmaq and John G. Troxel secretary. John McCarthy, editor of the Banner, was nominated for Clerk, against Henry Barkley and Addison Vandever. J. H. Loughridge for auditor, without opposition. and Wm. Jacks for Recorder and Jacob Wright for Commissioner. In an editorial paragraph Candidate McCarthy announced that it was not his intention to use his paper to advance his political interests, but if his opponents got to throwing dirt at him, then they would get it hot from the bat. Or words to that effect. The northwestern Indiana M. E. cmference at Delphi, had appointed H. W. Brown and Wood for Rensselaer, and the surrounding country. The firm of Blair & Purcupile was dissolved by mutual consent. A new merchant in town was J. H. Franks, whom we suspect was an Israelite. He did not handle everything, for a wbnder, but only ready made “clodings,” and such. The premium list of the coming county was published, and they amounted td the extravagant sum of $68.50 in all.
