Kick

One of the Gifford farms, in Bark ley Tp., and about two miles east . of Newland, was the scene of a very dangerous accident, Tuesday evening. The victim was Ernest Mellender, the 21 year old son of John Mellender, a well knowD resident of this county and formerly for some years, a resident of Rensselaer. The boy was out driving the horses from the pasture, about six o’clock, and to hurry one of them along a little he walked up behind it and struck it a slap on the hip. Instantly he was kicked in the head, with a new shoe. The kick was over the right eye, and tho the Boy was knocked down he was not made immediately unconscious, hut was able to rise and walk to the house, where he was almost immediately seized with convulsions and became unconscious. A physician from Rensselaer attended him and found a very large triangular cat, and his skull was bidly fractured, so., that a piece of the skull bone of several square inches in dimensions was removed by the physician. The boy’s chances for recovery aie considered very doubtful. He remained unconscious for most of the night but partly regained his facul-, ties next morning.
