Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 38, Number 83, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 13 July 1906 — THE CITY COUNCIL. [ARTICLE]
THE CITY COUNCIL.
A largely signed remonstrance of the Division and Main street property owners against the proposed improvement of those streets and a portion of Washington street was presented. The next meeting is the time set for acting on this proposed improvement, but the talk among the Council now is that it will be entirely dropped for this year at least. Not only on account of the opposition among the property owners but also on account ot the great expense it would be to the city on account of the many street crossings the city would have to make as well as the long stretch along Weston, alias “Gold Brick” park. ” The Mayor was authorized to sign a contract for coal for city use to run until April Ist 1908. It was with The Shirley Hill Coal Company and the following are the prices at which the company is to deliver the coal for at Rensselaer: Mine run $2 per ton; steam lump $2.20; Domestic lump $2.45; slack $1.60. This is about ,40 cents a ton less all around than the present contract, but the coal companies get just as much as they did before, the difference having been made by a reduction in freight rate.of 40 cents on a ton. N. Littlefield petitioned for a removal of the special assessment of $45 on his lot on Cullen street for street improvement. The attorney was directed to look up the law regar ding the matter. Rensselaer Post G. A. R. petitioned to have the name of McCoy Avenue changed to Milroy Avenue. The motion to make the change was lost by a vote or two for to three against. Councilman McColly, who voted against the change, intimated he would vote for it if it was to be petitioned for by the residents of the street.
