Independent Candidate For Congress

Down at Lafayette petitions are being circulated to get the name of Melville W. Miller, of that city, on the official ballot in this district as an independent Republican candidate for Congress, and with the hopes that the Democrats will endorse him at Michigan City, next Saturday. Miller is the man who held the position of Assistant Secretary of the Interior now held by Jesse E. Wilson of onr city, and it is understood he has nursed a sore toe of large and protuberant dimensions evei since his removal from that place. Theie is no such general dissatisfaction either with the Republican party in general or with the present Congressman from this district as would make Mr. Miller’s candidacy at all formidable, even if gets- the Democratic endorsement next Saturday. Mr. Miller for his own part says “he is in the hands of his friends” which means that he is willing to run.
