Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 38, Number 81, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 6 July 1906 — Lawyer Beveridge’s Fee. [ARTICLE]
Lawyer Beveridge’s Fee.
When Senator Beveridge was a practicing lawyer, and before his election, he took charge of a case for a life insurat oe company of New York City. That the democrats are hard np for political capital is evidenced from the fact that they now attempt to manufacture something out of this. Mr. Beveridge was not a senator at that time. He was a practicing lawyer and he was employed by the insurance company to attack a law that was believed to be detrimental to the life insurance business and public welfare. There was no good reason why Mr. Beveridge could have refused the employment. There was nothing questionable or dishonorable in his conduct, noth ing irregular or out of the ordinary. He served his client faithfully, earned his fee, was paid the money openly and above boardjfor the legal service performed and that was the end of it Attacks on him now be cause of the service mentioned are decidedly unfair and unwarranted and of no force whatever. Since he has been a United States senator, Mr. Beveridge has abandoned his law practice and accepted employment from no one. It is doubtful if there is another senator of the United States, at at present who has more carefully and completely guarded himself against connections that were in the slightest degree questionable than is true of Senator Beveridge. Having bought the Harmon dray lam prepared to do all kinds of hauling and ask the patronage of the public. The most prompt attention given to all work intrusted to me. V mmton bchocm.
