About Mortgage Exemptions.

Mortgage exemption certificates must be filed with the connty auditor daring March or April to be of any effect. They also have to be filed new each year, as certificates fi"*d last year or some prior, are of do effect for any other year. John Wingate, of the state board of tax tenmmiasiuuers, who has been visiting county seats in this part of the Bt.ite lately, explains the mortgage exemption law as follows. “Each person who owes a mortgage debt on the Ist of March and desires any exemption must file his own affidavit Nobody can swear 11 it but himself. A mortgage given jointly by husband and wife requires the affidavit of both to obtain a deduction. An administrator can file no mortgage exemption for the estate. Neither can one heir d afce an affidavit for all'the heirs. Firms or partnerships and corporr.tiomi are not entitled to any deduction upon their mortgage indebtedness. Oqe joint owner cannot make affidavit for the benefit of the other joint owners, it being a personal

irivilege. A guardian can make au affidavit for his ward, These affidavits must be made out after March 1 and filed with the cbunty auditor before the first day of May, showing the mortgage indebtedness bn the first daj' of March.
