ROW ON MICHIGAN CITY FVNDS. Comptroller Avenues Treasurer of It-regularitien in Account®. ' City Comptroller Henry C. Van Denson has preferred a charge of embezzlement against City Treasurer C. Ev Meyer of Michigan City.. In a communication ad- ► drowsed. Jo ’Mayor Schultz, the Comptroller says the treasurer was short in his aqsonnts on Feb. 1 in the sum of $6,133, and that this money had been used by Meyer to buy city warrants. The Council committee on finance met with the two officials Feb. 11, at which time the treasurer showed certificates of dcI>osit dated Feb. 10 for the amount of the shortage. The report of the committee was a whitewash, and as a result Comptroller Van Deusen submitted resolutions to the Council asking that a committee of citizens be appointed to audit the books of the treasurer. The resolutions were disregarded. Comptroller Van -Deusen says lie will lay the matter before the grand jury. Treasurer. Meyer says his accounts will be found above suspicion. YOUNG BRIDEGROOM MISSING. Wedding.ln Stopped by Sudden Disappearance of Principal. The wedding of Frank Gillis, a glass blower, and Miss Fannie Laugel, which was to take place soon at the parlors of the Rev. Father Fleischmann in Vincennes has been indefinitely postponed owing to the disappearance of the bridegroom. Gillis called at Miss Laugel's home on a recent evening, and final arrangements were completed. Miss Laugel, it is said, received a postal card later from her fiance with these bitter words: “I cannot stand it to face the future. You will never see me again. Good by.” No one knows the whereabouts of Gillis, who is" qtiiFe wealthy. but he hasTprObablj’ gone West. Miss Laugel. it js said, knows of no reason for his strange action further than that his mother opposed the marriage. SHOT FOR “ROASTING” TOWN. Remarks from Stage in Linton Heplied to with Revolver. Because Miss Pearl E. Elvyn, a member of a Chicago theatrical company, made several slighting remarks about the town during the performance in Linton, a man in the rear of the house rose with an oath, drew a revolver and shot the actress in the leg. She fell to the floor of the stage, and in an instant the audience was in an uproar. Women and. children screamed and fainted and men rushed about trying to find the man who had done the shooting. Though he was seen by several persons when he arose from his seat, he managed to hide himself hr - the excited crowd and escaped from the theater in the confusion. HAZED BY ELECTRIC CIRREXT. Ignorant Student* at Winona Technical Institute Endanger Victim®. Four students at Winona Technical Institute in Indianapolis were hazed by upper class men by being held in an electrical circuit until they were unable to stand when released. The' victims are Murray Robinson, Charles Fisher, IS illiam Marsha and Edward Jonas. They are still suffering from the effects of the treatment, but they steadfastly refuse to divulge the names of their tormentors. The ages of the four boys range from 17 to 19 years, and with the exception of Robinson they have been enrolled at the school for little more than a week. FIRE CLAIMS WOMEN’S LIVES. The former was standing near the grate in their home, near 1 ennison, and when her dress caught fire the mother went to her rescue. A smallpox epidemic has broken q(it in ths Michigan City schools. Twenty cases have developed, and a spread of the disease is feared.
