The Fire Company Situation

The City Council Monday night accepted the resignation of the Fire Company and appointed J. J. Montgomery as chief of a new company it is hoped to organize, and that a man of Mr. Montgomery’s well known energy and executive ability, will make a good chief, there is no room to doubt. None the less however, this whole affair is one greatly to be regretted. The retiring company have been very faithful and efficient in their work, and at a very small recompense in proportion to the labors, and exposures, which they had to undergo, and while they probably acted rather hastily in resigning, we are confident that nine out of ten of our citizens would have endorsed much more liberal treatment for them on the part of the City Council. It is now thought none of these old members will be willing to take service in the new company, though, this, if true, is greatly to be regretted, and it will 'be a misfortune if some way can not be found whereby most or all of them can not see their way to continue their labors in this line Gifford has made many sales since last report. ~ .
