A VISIT TO THE CORN SCHOOL
■> Being desirous to see the State Corn Show and also to find out how near I could come to get the First Prize in Section 1. That is as far south as the line was for section one was in Indiana. I started to Purdue on Monday at 11 a. m. Upon arrival I found the Corn. School in session and the' room full and overflowing, and which it continued until Friday. Three years ago when the first school was held the attendance daring all the week was scarcely 100 persons. This year the 'first day had over 200, and during the week went to 1000, for attendance. Which was far beyond the expectation of theoffiicals at Purdue as they had to make arrangement to hold the meeting in the Fowler Hall. The program was carried out complete and in the evening H. A. Huston gave a very good illustrated lecture with the stereoptiean upon his European visit last summer, and every one present_ felt like they -were in Germany and Scotland^— On Tuesday the master of farm machines gave the opening address and much good is expected to be done along that line. Next was selecting and storing of seed corn, which was very well carried out. In the evening the Agricultural students gave a fine program with recitations and music. On Wednesday the program began with experiments with corn with fertilizers in certain parts of the state. Then came corn improvement which was very well spoken of by all present. The attendance now was over 400. In the evening Miss Hamer of Purdue gave an illustrated lectnrer upon * ‘Educating the Girl in the Home. On Thursday the program began with Letting seed corn, grading and planting which was well discussed and thought much needed throughout the state. By this time Mr. T. E. Orr the best man upon poultry in the U. S. had to look for a larger room. In the evening O. J. Kern of Illinois gave an illustrated lecture upon school and school gardens, he also gave the well improved and unimproved schools in different parts of the state of Illinois and surely I think a good many farmers were made to feel ashamed abont the surroundings of some schools and school grounds. At least if all tha schools in Jasper county and their surroundings were photographed and shown in a crowd like there were at Purdue some would surely feel ashamed.* On Friday the program was mostly npon corn. And also a good talk given by the expert Judge of the corn show, Mr. Rowe, of Jacksonville, 111. He made the remarks of having some very fine corn in Indiana, bat also found some very fine corn frosted and be sure was cut short in judging by the scQre card. I had an exhibit of Reids Yellow [Dent corn of ten ears and won 3rd prize in section one. And that gave me six dollars in cash, which to be sore I feel somewhat proud of not expecting to win any in such a large competition, and made me feel more that the corn school was a complete success, I only wish to say brother farmer, it will do you good to go to the corn show next year. And make up your mind to grow some corn this season. The first prize was a good one with the sweepstakes amounting to 50 dollais which is I think worth while to work for. Yours truly,
WM. AUGSPURGER.
