Big Iujun and Wigwam Both Lost.

r A thing befell Jasper County’s most efelebratetl' w »odscraftsmam L»wly McGee, Tbars day.-- He was out on the trail ol minks and skunks, with his nephew and understudy billy McGee. They worWed over into east Jordan. aml intended to head in to Remington, and spend the night with relatives. Their dogs got sick however, and they concluded t) return to Rensselaer. They fol lowed the sand west for a time and imending to follow the general direction of Carpenter's creek, to about where it joins the v Iroquois. This tiny*supposed,tkek_ were doing, and tinally they left the sand ridges and struck out into a cultivated region, and heading, as they .thought, towards Rensselaer. However, the houses did not seem to have a familiar appearance to Laudy and the farther they walked%)ie less familiar they seem •ed. Finally they saw a man coni-" ing towards them in the road, with a team, ami. Landy wanted the hoy to aakdwur the -way to Rensselaer, but the boy said Landy could do that himself. * The man in the wa goh proved to be Billy Bringle, of 7 W'B miles west and well known to - Landy —j Landy tried to make his euquirieaiua diplomatic way, so that Billy would not think he was lost, if the wigwam was, after the mannei of the big Injun. It would not work, for Billy pointed

oat to Landy that instead of being beaded towaras Rensselaer Be whs goiug directly towards Broolc, and was already in sight of FWesman. There was a telephone line alongside the road which Landy had .helped build, but neither that nor any of the buildings in the vicinity looked like anything he had ever seen before. With Mr. Bringle's help Laudv got his bearings and sadly took the back track towards Rensselaer, arriving at six o'clock, after having walked about 14 miles out of their way. What adds to the strangeness cf their getting last was that sun was sinking brightly all the time and Landy was walking right towards the sun instead of from it as he should have done. However, they made a pretty good day's work, to console them for being lost, for thevgot a good mink skin and two skunks.

The Hammond News Says Nanghty Things.

And now comes the Hamt&oud News, and says naughty things about Rensselaer, aud all because i we have recenty taken occasion to cite Hammond as a pertinent example of what real good towns ought not to be. The News says, .for instance, that traveling men says there i>'nt a faster little town Tuth.e_state than Rensselaer. That poliefT and oiher gambling games are always ou tap and anything yon want in the booze line ou Sure days. Ami the News winds up with the .usual the -larsteA banker, se lreartlcss that lie robbed the widow of her bread and the helpless babe, of it very pap. Verily. Reus-elaer has it naughty people, as what place does not? xiut they keep a little ’shady heye and don’t run the whole town, as the saloons and other resoits did Ilaimmond, until Gov. Hanly clap p d the ltd down there, and there by seems toltaveincurred the implacable hostility of all the papers and a large part of the population, of that city. As to the alleged facilities for drinks here ou Su inlays, our citizens generally do not know' of any such conditions, and would get the courts busy pretty quick, if they learned of them. We still have a few places where t links can be had on week days though, and the liustliug citizens of

Hammond, especially the politicians pfboth parties, never seem to need any directions as to where to go’to find them, when they come here, but seem to have an iustiuetive knowledge of just where to head for. Regarding our busted bauker, we cau truly say that for several years before he failed Tom was solider at Hammond more than he was at home, and no papers praised “the genial whole-soul-ed Tom McCoy’’ more freely nor fulsomely than those of Hammoud and especially, if we remember right, the Hammond News.
