Living Too High.
The revelations at Indianapolis during the past three months have been astonishing. The audiior of state has been removed from office, the adjut int general was forced to resign and now comes the startling revelations concerning the use of public funds by Daniel E. Storms, secretary of state. All these officials have been living too high. They have been living beyond their salary allowances. They have not been content to live the simple life that should characterize the conduct of a public servant. Placed in possession of public moneys they used the funds as though they were their own and when required to make an accounting they were forced to appeal to their friends for financial aid. They had nothing at the time they entered the public service but it was not long after they were in office until they began to show signs of thrift, ’"he money used to make a display belonged to the state. They were betrayers of a public trust and what has happened to them is what usually happens to officials who unlawfully use public funds. It appears from re liable authority that Daniel E. Storms, secretary of state, was short $77,000 and that to make settlement on October Ist he was forced to borrow that sum or suffer exposure. He succeeded in getting the money but the exposure has come.—Logansport Pharos.
