A Monument for James Carpenter.
A movement is on foot in Remington to erect a monument to the memory of James Carpenter, one of Jasper County’s most celebrated early residents. Carpenter’s Creek was named after him and so .Jso was Carpenter Township when it was formed, long after his death. He was a mighty hunter in his day and generation, and he met a death not out of keeping with a hunter's experiences. He was frozen to death, in the winter of 1842, in his camp. His remains lie on the high bluff overlooking the lagoon at Fountain Park. The plan is to try to raise money enough t build a monument by private subscription.
