Just Look Here at This Yere Ear.
'V The usually very peaceful propinquity of The Republican office and the McKay Laundry across the street therefrom, had its accustomed quiet rudely disturbed, about eight o’clock last Saturday evening. It seems there was trouble brewing between Dolph Day, oldest son of Hiram Day,'and Harry Reed Jr. By the story Young Harry had been raising Old Harry the night before,, with a stray member of the other sex; and which last being, as alleged, in some way related to Dolph by marriage, he went to Harry's house and told his wife about her husband manoeuvers. Harry took great offeuse thereat and promised himself he would thrash Dolph, at the first opportunity. They met first about six o’clock at one of the saloons, on the Leves. bat after a good deal of | hostile talk they separated for the time being, without any actual wfii- , fare. About 8 o’clock Harry and , one John Hill, a faithful retainer of his, saw Dolph in Free Wood’s barber shop, and they then went half a block east and waited for Dolph, by Tile republican building.
Pretty soon Dolpli came out and seeing what was waiting for him he struck across the street to the Laundry, and borrowed a revolver ot his brother-in-law Mr. McKay. Reed and Hill had followed hiin across and when he came out, Heed stood in a passage way close by, and informed Dolpli that)' he was there to do him up. Dolph stuck the gun iu Harry’s face, and the latter, full of barley-corn braverys told him to shoot away. i 1/olph then handed the gun back to Mr. McKay, who had come out after him; and Iteed took advantage of the opportunity thus offered, aud hit Dolph on the jaw. Dolph then pulled out of his pocket the butt end of a brick and with it hit Harry on the butt end of his ear. The brick was a sample of Murray’s new building, aud it stood this test excellently, being much better material than the ear, for the ear was smashed while the brick remained intact. About this time Night watch Zea came along, aud p'ursuaded Harry to go to Squire Irwin's office and swear out a warrant for Dolph’s ar rest, which was done, and the trial held, forthwith. The Squire heard the evidence, and found Dolph not guilty, as Reed had not only struck the first blow, but hul forced the fight on Day, by laying in wait for him. Reed’s ear was pretty badly battered up, by the impact of the brick bat.
