MORE ABOUT McCOY CASES
More definite information has been received regarding what was done, and the future status of the various McCoy state cases, at Mon ti cello. The sufficiency of the indictments was attacked by the lawyers for the defense, Haywood and McHugh, but 'they were held good by the court. The attorneys for the defense then filed the expected affidavits for continuance, one of them setting up that he had another big case to try next week; and the other that some of his friends or relatives were in trouble with the criminal law, in Milwaukee, and were needing his assistance to keep them out of the pen. They also claimed that they had an “expert” going oven the books, and did not want to go to trial until he made his report. A continuance was therefore granted until the February term, and the cases set for the second Tuesday of the term, being February 18th, and *the first jury trial on the calendar. As all parties agreed to the order setting the trial for this date, it will take some very ingenious figuring and hard swearing for the defense to get out of going to trial again when the time comes!
