tSnte'-ed in til* Oft ia of the Librarian a W-tihinKton as eooond-claas matter. That football as now played is too rough and dangerous a game, we do not deny, and in fact greatly hope President Roosevelt, a greatj admirer of and believer in athletic snort, will succeed in his movement to have the more dangerous f atures of the game ruled out. At the same time it is easy to overestimate the danger and roughness >f the game, as it is also easy to forget that there is no kind of athletic sport that is wholly free from danger. Especially is there mo sport in which physical strength aid activity are brought into strenuous use, and but few such sports as beneficial, to any great degree which have not some degree of danger. bile as for such amusements as swimmiug, boating and hunting, they each probably claim twenty victims to football one. Rensselaer ] ;H bees the greatest football town, [, its population, in the state, for in my years, and though a number of -.evere and lammtable accidents have occured among our players, Du fatalities have ever resulted, nor mu >ng those whom they played ag ii ust; nor any permanent injuries. O t lie other hati l there have been li.i f a dozen fatal hunting accidents in n county; and a number perm - icutly injured, and a full dozen O' .hire deaths* Iroirt drowning fwhiio boating or swimming.
There are said to be reliable re- | cords showing 45 deaths from football in 5 years. A lamentable record truly; but the fatal hunting accidents, in Maine alone probably reach that number every year; while several huudred deaths occur some years from Fourth of July accidents.
