Glutted Chicago Cattle Market.
One Invoice From Jasper County Supplies Chicago For 11 Days. Jasper County claims the distinction of having, supplied the entire demand for beef Jcattle in Chicago for 11’consecutive' days,,incl uding all that were slaughtered for local consumption and all packing and dressed beef shipping stock.} Inasmuch as Chicago uses we will not tiegiu to 'say how many thousands of eattle'every day, this sounds like a pretty big statement, but the circumstance did not occur this year, nor jet last year but but to lie exact just 50 years ago this month. y Along about of October 1855, some 1300 cattle were driven from this region by John B. Lefler who had bought them for a Mr. Slocum, of New Yoik City. They were divided into several different herds, and one herd of 250 was driven by George Kessler as boss, and George R. Robinson, Harvey Phillips and Kane Galbraith as helpers. Mr. Kessler was the oldest and died some years ago, in Barkley, Tp. All the other four were springhtly young chaps then, and are still more or less sprightly old chaps now. Kane Galbraith piloted the lead steer of the herd. It took eight days to get the cattle to the Ten Mile House being that far out from Chicago, a place now not far southeast of Englewood. There it was found that the whole city would only use from 100 to 125 head of beef cattle a day. and the cattle were, accordingly, herded around the Ten Mile House, and each day’s supply was driven in every morning, until, the entire 1,360 were sold. Robinson and Galbraith were among those who stayed until the last bead was sold, but the only circumstance specially remembered was that Kane, being the “same old Kane” young as is when old he proceeded to “raise Kane” by getting tqned up in pretty good shape.
