Coramon Schools, and. like some which came into use 10 or 12 years ago) they were called .the Indiana Series, The readers differed little if any from McGuffey’s readers, and were executed in a very neat style-,, other books were Ray’s Butler’s Grammars, and Mitchell’s Geographies. The editor lamented greatly because a series recommended by the Northern Indiana Teachers’ Institute had not been selected and fgared that it would be a long time before uniformity was secured in books. * ' The Millerites, whose appointed day of universal doom had recently got side-tracked, had set a new date which was May 19th, 1854. There were to he no further mistakes nor postponements in pulling off the great event. An excellent two column article on Education was contributed by R. C. P., of Rensselaer. He strong ly urged one school room 20 feet by 26, for every sixty scholars which was not extravagant consid ering there is about that much room now for every 20 scholars There were two churches finished and one under way in Rensselaer, but no school house nor any prospect of one. There were 150 children and lots of wealth in the place, which truly, as stated, forbad longer delay in erecting a school house. One 26 by 40. divided into two rooms, with a porch on one side and a wood house on the other, was recommended, and would be “fully sufficient for many years.” The building could be built and furnished for SBOO to SI,OOO. According to an article from the Fort Wayne Sentinel all that was needed to start the proposed great east and west railroad to building with a rush w r as for the people along the proposed line to come forward promptly and take such stock as such a work is justly entitled to expect from them. The final survey and location of the line would begin immediately, and work on it as soon as the season will admit. In lowa it was said up wards of a million dollars of stock would be taken. The road was now spoken of as the Fort Wayne, Lacon and Plate Valley Airline Railroad. The Turks and Russians were a it, hot and heavy.
Mr. Soule, U. 8. minister to Spain had fuught a duel with Marquis DeLangor, the French minister, and Young Soule one with the Duke of DeAlba, because of remarks the Frenchy had made regarding Mrs. Soule's dress. No harm was done to the duelists, ncr presumably to the dress. The Court of Common Picas o Jasper county was in session this week, but the editor forgot to mention it > Godey’s Lady’s Book, then in .ta 24th year was advertised. T. 8. Arthur was to begin a ‘’thrilling story” in the Januaiy number entitled ‘‘The Trials of a N<edlewoman.” it must have been thrilling for a fact. Last Car-load of peaches for the season, at Eger’s next Tuesday a> d Wednesday Sept 26th, and 27h.
