Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 38, Number 13, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 22 September 1905 — To Number Mail Boxes. [ARTICLE]
To Number Mail Boxes.
Postmaster Meyer has received a circular letter from the Depart ment instructing him to assign numbers to all the boxes on the rural routes from the postoffice and to record them in his route book. Patrons will be notified of their respective numbers and will be ex pected to have their boxes number ei accordingly. Carriers will then be permitted to deliver mail addressed only to the box number. This new rule will not only be a great convenience for the mail order houses in scattering their beguiling literature in rural neighborhoods, but also to the green goods dealers and fakirs and sharpers oi all kinds. All they will have to do is to learn or guess how many rural routes lead out from the towns of the communities they wish to work and then send their letters to the different box numbers on the different routes, and the whole thing is as easy lying. Verily it is a great scheme for the mail order houses and green goods fakers, but for any good purpose it will serve honest people we, fail to see it.
