Selling Beer on Trains.
The right of the Monon railroad to sell liquor on its trains without • license in every oounty, is to be tested in the higher courts of Indiana. The trouble started over a personal encounter between Walter Williams a colored porter •on the Monon. and Nicholas Ep ipinghoneen of Louisville. Williams was arrested, tried and fined for assault and battery. Daring the trial it developed that Williams sold Eppinghousen, a bottle of beer on the train wbile it was in Monroe county, so Williams was fined for selling liquor without a license. Eppinghousen then brought a SIO,OOO damage suit against the Monon oompany on account of the assault. The Monon paid both of Williams’ fines and announoes through its attornev that it will fight the case. Meanwhile no liquor is sold on the Monon trains while going through Monroe oonnty.

Jasper oounty is fast coming to the front as a great cucnmber country.

A LITTLE NONSENSE.
How Hank Sullivan Put a Faro Bank Out of Business. tc l used to hate a quarrelsome man like pizen,” said Hank Sullivan, one of the leading terrors of Red Gulch, to a select crowd in “Wicked Mike” Hogan’s saloon, “but I don’t do it no more. One o’ thet kind saved me from losin’ all the dust I’d dug in three years, an’ I kain’t never fergit it. Ilow’d it happen ? This way: I wuz down to the Silver King in Denver playin’ faro bank to beat the band. I’d been back in the mountains fer nigh on to three years an’ was full o’ gold dust an’ the desire for excitement. Bill Jennings, the quarrelsomest man I ever see, was with me. Well, luck wuz against me, an’ pretty soon I see myself down to the cloth. Seven thousand dollars of good, hard yellow gold dust gone across the table to the house 1 As the last chip I had on earth was raked in I had a hunch to play the ace open. I knew it would come. I felt it wuz a certainty, but my money was out. I wuz about to rise an*- go out an’ blow my head off or somethin’ o’ thet sort when I happened to glance at Bill Jennings. Thet look saved me. Bill was always carryin’ a ‘chip on his shoulder’ fer somebody. I took thet chip an’ put it on the ace. It won, an’ from that minute luck turned my way. In a week’s play I 'had the faro bank dealer sellin’ wienerwurst on a corner. Cleaned him clear out 1 An’ that’s why I’ve sorter got a weakness for a quarrelsome man.”— New Orleans Times-Democrat. Talk Is Quicker.
Miss Chatters They say, you know, there is nothing quicker than thought. Mr. Knox—For woman there is. She always speaks before 6he thinks. The Trouble With Him. “I refuse to talk to you, sirl” roared the indignant old father. “If you will come around when you are sober to ask me for my daughter I may consider the matter.” “When I’m shober? Thash all right, old man —thash all right. Glad to do it. Only I never seem to want her when I’m shober.”— Chicago ‘Record-Herald. All Fixed. “Pa,” said Miss Strong, “I wish ;ou would stay in this evening. Mr. 'ardey will want to speak to you.” “So he has really proposed at last, eh?” “No,” replied the daughter, with an air of determination, “but he will tonight.” Catholic Standard and Times. -
Why tho Ball Was Removed. “That druggist is a most accommodating fellow. Applying the Golden Rule. “I'm going to ask her to sing again.” “I’m sure you don’t want to hear her.” “No; but, you know, we must do as we would be done by."—New York Times.
