HIS COLLECTION OF ORCHIDS.
One of the stories John Burroughs, the aged naturalist, loves to tell has to do with a friend of his named Orr. On one of his trips Mr. Burroughs happened to be in the town where Mr. Orr lives. Meeting him in the street, Mr. Burroughs insisted that hi 6 friend should accompany him to the hotel for luncheon. As they were eating Mr. Burroughs inquired if his friend was not interested in any specialty. “I think,” said the naturalist, “every man ought to have a collection of some kind. It adds zest to life.” “Oh, yes,” said his friend, “I have quite a collection. I am interested in flowers. Come home with me, and I’ll show them to you.” As they approached the Orr home air fine, healthy children, playing on the lawn, ran to meet their father. ’ “These,” said Mr. Orr, with a twinkle in his eye, “form my collection of orchids. Ain’t they grand apecimens ?”
Modernization of Egypt.
With a trolley towing plant established on the banks of the Nile to draw dahabeahs to and fro, the Modernization of Egypt may be considered as tolerably complete. The forty centuries which, as Napoleon told his soldiers, stood on the summit of the pyramid looking at them as they marched past are no doubt still there, keeping their long vigil, but whatever may have gone by beneath them they have never looked forth on an electric trolley and towing apparatus to multiply from ten to thirty times or more the flotillas and commerce of the Nile, exceeding all the efforts of Amenhotep or Psammenitus. The apparatus may not be so spectacular as the pyramids, hut it promises to be much more useful to Egypt.
An Octopus Brake.
While steaming along off the coast of Mexico recently those who were on board of the Pacific Mail Steamship company’s steamer Peru noticed that the vessel’s progress jras much slower than it should be. The chief engineer was informed, end he reported the engines were mating the customary revolutions. lAn investigation was made, and across the bow of the steamer a manta, a species of octopus, was found clinging. A sailor was lowered over the side, and he attached sharp hooks to the monster, and, with the aid of the capstan, its hold was released. It suddenly started away, taking the hook and line with it.
