Good Fishing Near St. Louis on Rock Island Line to Kansas City.
St Louis— An enthusiastic disciple of Ike Walton thus writes to the St Louis Globe-Democrat: “After reading in last Sunday’s issue the report of the catch made by the St Louis boys at Indian ford eddy, and on the Little Maries, we made ready for a week’s outing at Freeburg, near the crossing of the Rock Island and Gasconade, and Saturday night left this city to go to Freeburg, a few miles west of Gascondy, arriving there 1:15 Sunday. We organized for the week, and Monday morning headed for the Marie, about two and a half miles from Freeburg. Here we found a beautiful stream in the pink of condition for fishing, and pitched our camp, catching the first day seventy-two fish in all; among them were nine jacks, fourteen bass and the balance channel cats and large perch. Monday night we had a cloudburst, which raised the river so we had no fishing Tuesday, but put in the day killing young squirrels, at which we had very good sport, and supplied our camp with meat for several days. On Wednesday we started fishing again, though the creek did not get in good condition before Thursday. “We remained in camp until Saturday noon, and I can assure any readers of the Globe-Democrat we made the largest catch ever made by four men in that length of time, taking in all 386 fish; all of which were of very nice size. The largest bass weighed 3% pounds, largest jack weighed 4y a pounds, and the largest cat pounds. We caught in all 126 bass and 84 jacks, the balance cat and perch. The accommodating hotel man at Freeburg packed our catch and we landed in Marshal this morning with more fish than were ever brought here by one party of fishermen."
