Prof Sparling Now at Washington.
Prof, Samuel E. Sparling son of Joseph Sparling south of town and for the past six or seven years a member of the faculty of Wisconsin University has been in Wash ington. D. C. since February and will remain until about June let, where he is engaged in a study of business organisations and methods as applied to the great corporations- He intends upon the completion of bis research to write a book on the subjeot. bnt as to its publication he has not decided; in faot, what results from hia study seems to ooncern him far less than he pleasure he finds while engaged in it. He puts in his time at the Library of CoDgtess, where every copyrighted book in America is at his cummaod, and as his study will cover a period of about four months, it wi'l b 9 understood that he is giving ihe subjeot profound consideration. For many years Sam has been a student and authority on matters of municipal government, having been a member of the oity council of Madison for four years and the editor of a widely credited paper on munioipal reform. Het.was a firm supporter of the Lafollette party in Wisoon. sin, and is an advocate of lfgislative ideas of that strenuous leader, having helped to frame the oivil service bill row a law in that stateHe is of the opinion that the corporate greed of railroads and other corporations, aided by their practices of discrimination and their power to make or evade law will sooner or later result in government ownership of many public utiiitiee- He is not a socialist in the general acceptation of the term but he believes many good qualities exist in the aooialist idea and that the growth of its favor is abreast of the understanding of it A great natiye abilty, of indomit. able determination, of sturdy qualities throughcut, a profound student and a ceaseless worker, Sam Sparling is beocming one of the most valuable citizens in the United States, and his Rensselaer and Jasper county friends join the Republican in hearty common, dation of his labots.
