Big Swag For the Lawyers.
The fact that the big Moses Fowler Chase case was settled out of oonrt. some months ego, was published at the time. Also that the Dnhmes, bzaten at- every point, had surrendered all claims to the guardianship of the demented boy and further had paid their own lawyers and paid over to Freder-. iok S- Chase the guardian about 8125,000 in cash, and Chase to pay his own lawyers. The last act in the famous case took plaoe Monday, at Lafayette, bafore Judge DeHart, at which time Chase was authorized to settle with bis attorneys, and all the amounts aggregated SIIB,OOO. Of thia sum the well known Lafayette firm of Stnart, Hammond & Simms receives the largest snm, namely SBB,OOO for services and $255 for expenses. Our former townsman ia Col E- P. Hammond of this firm, and was the one who had special charge of the work in this Chase case. The next largest attorneys pay S3O 181 goes to Ad dison C Harris, of Indianapolis. Samnel P. Baird gets $17,000 Hanly & Wood, of Lafayette $lO, 000; Fraser & Ishatn of Fowler SIO,OOO and aome smaller sums to other, It aggregates the largest sum ever paid lawyes]in any case in this state.
