FEARS TO WEAR HIS UNIFORM.
Patlictic Experience of an Army Officer in Public Pining Hull. An army, officer, stationed in Washington. ancl residing with ids wife in a small apartment house of the northwest suction of the city, had a remarkable and pathetic experience a few evenings ago. It is his wont to appear in the public dining hall for dinner. clad In a tuxedo, lie does not like to wear a uniform, as l'ew army officers do. unless it he on very formal duly. There had been some disaster to his evening clothes when lie entered his apartments, and his citizens’ clothes were drenched with rain. Nothing remained for him but to wear bis uniform down to dinner. No sooner had he entered the diningroom than an estimable lady, widow of an officer, who lost his life not long ago in the service, on seeing the uniform shrieked and fell in a swoon. The unexpected sight revived recollections of her own sorrow. She was carried out, and a doctor summoned. The major was much affected, but ate Ids dinner and again retired to his hptiftments, still considerably disturbed. Soon thereafter the bell rang, and another lady, whose husband was killed in Hie Philippines, appeared. She, too, was unaccustomed to seeing him in uniform, and faint'd at the portal. That was more than he could stand, and the major put on his wet clothes and wore them till bedtime, lie Is afraid to wear his uniform more in his own house, where callers arts likely to behold him.
