JASPER COUNTY AS IT SHOULD BE.
The above two fiiaps were made several years ago, when ihe general rearranging of the c vil townships of Jasper County to conform as far as practicable wi>h the congressional towuehips, wse disoussed Various considerations made auoh a res raugement then difll, cult if not impracticable, and oonr ditions see m even less favorable now, And though we row republish the maps by request it is without any intention to advooate any such radical change at this time. Among the moat important obrxoiaolea at present in the way, is it vicald disarrange and probably defeat the proposed grave
road systems already voted for in Gilhm and Hanging Grove townships Politically a charge would not now be advisable either; as it would so greatly disturb our Dem ocratio friends comf. rtable position in the cc.uuty, tt at they would think wh ‘‘done it a puppets.” Thus it would make two new townships with Republican trustees appointed, and worse still it would put trustees Harvey and Grant Davisson both in Barkley township, end two trustees both of the same family and in the same township would not work at all well. And that also would leave Union township to be supplied
with a Republican trustee, and away would go glimmering the chanoe for a Democratic County Superintendent two years hence. Therefore we are not advocating any [general change in township lines now, but hope it oan be done sometime. At present we advooute but one change; and that is the cutting off of the ea6t portion of Jordan township and dividing the out off portions between Marion and Carpenter, in order that the bad three miles of read between Rensselaer and Remington may be graveled or macadamized. As to the new township movement in Union, that is pnreiy a looal matter for the people of the township to fight out, before the Commissioners. . ~~ It shonld be explained here that these maps as drawn and engraved are erronious in that they “swipe” six sections [ot land from White county, and add it to the south end of Milroy township. Which would be all right, if White county did not find it out.
NOTE.—The letters M. M. in the above map indicate new and unnamed Townships
