TOUGH WEATHER EIGHT YEARS AGO.
We still believe as previously stated that our low temperature of 23 degrees below zero, Monday morning was tbe lowest here since the terrible winter of 1884-85; or just 20 years 8go; although tbe winter of 1896-97 was one of great severity, and at one time, nkmely on Feb. Bth, 1897, many termometers marked from 20 to 24 below. But as these same grade of mercury thermometers some of them went as low as 28 below Monday, it is safe to oonolude tbat last Monday morning’s weather was oolder than that of 8 years ago. In one respeot however that was a severer spell of cold than the one we are now haviug, and that was oontin uous cold without a let-up. For 10 days there was zero weather every day. And although we have now had zero weather for 9 days in two weeks there has been a little milder weather interspersed between the coldest days.
