Col. E. P. Hammond Honored:
Col. Edwin P. Hammond now of Lafayette but so long a resident of Rensselaer, was Wednesday honor ml by the congress of the United States electing him a member of the board of managers of the na tional homes for disab'ed soldiers. Thare is no salary attached to the position, hut it comes in such a a way that it is deemed a high h mor by any man Oil. Hammons has been elected to succeed Vfaj »r George W. Steele, of M non, who resigned to accept the position of governor of the National Soldier*’ home at Marion (Jul. Hammond made an excellent record as a soldier and today affiliates with the Grand Army of the Republic; The Union Vet rau Legion and the Lcyal Leyiou. He went to the front at the beginning of the civil war from Rensse'aer as a member of the Ninth Indiana infantry, served for three months in West Virginia and took p-irt in the first battle of the Civil war.
