St. Dunstu and the Devil.
One of the most famous smiths of the Weald was St. Dunstan, archbishop of Canterbury. Mayfield. In Sussex, Is the site of an ancient archleplsco(ai palace, and here, according to some, took place the terrific encounter between St Dunstan and the devil. At any rate, the anvil, hammer and tongs which are alleged to have belonged to the saint are still preserved at Mayfield palace.—Gentleman’s Magaslne.
