A mild sensation has been oaused by the arrest at Bedford of two worki ig men* < n suspicion of complicity in the Sarah Shaffer mar der. They are Frink Evans and Elmer Browning. There seems to be little or no evidence against them, and at Bedford bat little importance is attaohed to the irrest. For the moat part the people there seemed to think that the guilty manjescaped justioe when James McDonald was acquitted. Though a few still cling to the idea that a “prominent business mac,” was the murderer. Wednesday eveaing, Jaa. 18th
tbe no’orioue K. N. indulged in a kind of atsmemant. Atthongh mysterious notifications had given warning, eaoh K. N was rather nnpreperd for an arreat* by the City Marshal. The oity mauhal entered eaoh ho nee, read a writ of arrest and conducted the accused K, N. to the patrol(a bobsleigh) in waiting, After a merry chase and perhaps a little hesitation on the part of some members* of the Clnb the patrol landed the victims at the home of one of the girls. Explanations followed, also a monstrous box of candy and a general jollification. Superintendent Ootton in his address to tbe township trustees, says that in rnral schools the mtnimnm salary should be S6OO, and that for efficient service there ahonld be rapid advance to SI,OOO, and then in addition to hia annual vacation he should have a year off with half
pay: peraamably SSOO for bis year's vacation That would bs nice for the teaoher off on a vacation, but how about the tax payers? If teadhers are given a year off on half pay* why not the butcher, <aud baker, and candle stick inakc-r Lot os all have a vioation, and drtw half ration? from the state. The idea is a capital one, and b fi ting the high source from which i sprang. With these amendment* we m ove* i*s ed option. —Kentland Enterprise,

Since last May 18 applicants for saloon licenses at Fowler have been defeated by remooßtranoes, and now two fresh ones have bobbed up for the February term. The proposed amendment to the Nioholson law, will pat a stop to euoh repeated attempts to open saloons in anti-saloon communities, or rather in some anti saloon communities. In places like Rensselaer, where the fights are oonfiaed t i wards, the amendments will not be nearly so effective.
