OBITUARY.
John Luther Pieroe, eldest sou of William C, and Mary Pierce, was b;>rn in county, near La'ayette, March 1, 1848. His pareats moved to Jasper county, near RensseHer when he was abjut ois month old. His biyhocd vra3 spent in this county. He attended Presbyterian college at Valparaiso during the winter of 1865. He went to Lebanon in
1866 and attended the old Presbyterian Academy, graduating from that institution in 1868. He was appointed riding bailiff of the Boone oironit court in February of 1869 and served until he entered the law school of Indiana University. He entered that institution as a senior and graduated in 1870 with the degree of L. B. After graduating from law soheol he entered into partnership with Gen. James R. Carnahan at Lafayette. He returned to that city in 1871 and had resided here ever since. He was eleoted townolerkof Lebanon in 1872 and served one year, after which he formed a law partnership with ex-Judge Stephen Neal, which partneiehip extended from 1875 to 1878. In 1881 he was eleoted mayor to fill the unexpired term of T C. Laughlin and was regularly eleettd to the same office in 1882 and again in 1888.
Mr. Pieroe had oharge of * The Lebanon Mercury” from 1887 to the time it was sold. He formerly belonged to the I. O. O. F, having gone through all the chairs of the looal oamp | and anbordinate lodge. He was a member of the M. E. church and also belonged to the Botn a County Bar Association. Politically he was a stannoh republican and oontribnted his efforts for the success of the party.
Mr. Pieroe was married near LafayetteDeo 22, 1870 to Margaret A. Smith. He was the father of seven children, three of whom; Mrs. Mable I. Farr, of Waynesville, 0., Hope, Pearl and Thomas L. of Lebanon survive, His father, William C. Pierce and two sister, Mrs. Alice Howe and Mrs. Raohel E. Kncx, all of Rensselaer, also survive him. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the United Brethern oburch at Lebanon. Rev. Demetrius Tillotson c fii’ciatinp. assisted by Rev. F. M. k Pavey, cf Thomtown.
