Rensselaer Semi-Weekly Republican, Volume 36, Number 134, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 6 December 1904 — HEMENWAY WILL BE SENATOR [ARTICLE]
HEMENWAY WILL BE SENATOR
The fight for tne Uaited States Senatorship to suooeed Senator Fairbanks is now practically over beforn it was fairly started. It bas been evident frcm tbe first that Congressman James A, Hemenway of Booneville, was far in tbe load of all tbe others, and now that the other candidates have looked over the situation, they find that be has vetes enough pledged to eleot him on the first ballot. /
As a result of this disoovery O. B. Landis and Harry S, New have already announced their withdrawal from the race, and Congressman Ornmpaoker, the only one left in the field against Hemenway, has aooording to the Indianapolis Star stated bis intention to formally withdraw in a few days. Mr. Hemenway now fills the very important position of obairmiD of the Committee on Appropriations in the House, and by virtue of that position, is the most prominent member of the House from this state; and is, in fact, next to the ohairroan of tte Ways and Means Committee, the reoognized leader of the flonse. He will ably maintain Indiana’s high prestige in the United States Senate.
