CAUGHT WITH THE GOODS ON HIM.
v Thursday afternoon Officer Christie Vick armed with a search warrant, joined E. E, Earl, of Terre Haute, deputy state game warden, and went to the Kankakee river, to look for a man alleged to be fishing with a 100 foot gill net They went io Wheatfield by train, drove then to Dunn’s bridge where they stayed till this morning, then went by boat to the place where the suspected party was supposed to be. There they found Jerry Swisher, of Medaryville, with a 100 foot net he had just pulled out of the water. He saw the officers coming and made a run for his tent. They supposed he was after his gun, and Christie made quick time and beaded him off, while Earl went into the tent and found a heavily loaded doublebarreled shot gun. “You ” Swisher remarked to Christie” If I had got that gun before you fellows did. neither of you wou’d have got out alive.” A moDg the fish in the net was a pickeral which Christie ewe-.re was as big as.a horse. It was als pounder at least. This Swisher gave to a man who was with him The net was seized and, Swisher was br oughtdown here, this afternoon, where he plead guilty before Squire Troxell. The Squire assesed a fine of $lO for the school
fund and S2O for the state {game warden’s fund, which were the minimum penalties allowed by law. The total, with other costs adaed, was $46.15. He stayed the fine for 90 days, with U. M. Baughman surety. Swisher is a little old man, with a mighty and bushy beard, and as scrappy as he is hairy. He is also said to be worth SIO,OOO.
