A Slap at Whistler.

A young San Franciscan, the owner of a large and valuable collection of autographs, once wrote to James Mac Neill Whistler, politely requesting his signature. The letter was sent in care of the London Royal academy, with which the famous American painter was at outs. After four months the letter was returned to the San Francisco address from the dead letter office in Washington. Covering the envelope was the word, repeated numberless times, “Unknown.”
