GETS $40,000 DAMAGES.
Little Girl’s Award in Personal Injury Cdse Unusually Large. After nearly nine years of litigation 15-y ear-old Emma Grenell of Chicago has been given a verdict for $40,000 in her suit against the West Chicago Street Railroad Company for terrible personal iujuri-es. The case is remarkable for several reasons. The trial just ended is
the third on this issue. The verdict in one trial was set aside because of jurybribing scandals developed in connection with it, some of the jurors testifying that they had been paid money to favor the company’s side. The sum awarded at the last trial—s4o,ooo —is said to be the largest ever given in a case of this kind in an Illinois court. Another hearing has been asked for by the company, and if it is granted the little girl who was maimed for life nine years ago will have to wait still longer before receiving compensation for her injuries.
