STATE BUILDING INSPECTOR HERE

James H. Roberts, of South Bend, deputy state faotory and and building inspector for northwest Indiana, was here Tuesday, on an offioial visit, and got reasonably busy during his stay. He condemned the two fire escapes ladder at the Makeever House, one at the east end and one at the nerth end and ordered them replaced by iron stairs instead of tbe ladders. At tbe Nowels house he ordered a stair fire eaoape from the third to the seoond balcony, and a drop ladder below that. Also a ladder from tbe baloony in tbe rear. At the opera house, wbiob he fouud in comparatively safe condition, he ordered a fire onrtain provided and hand railings at the front and rear 6tairs. These with tbe large exit door, recently p'cvidtd from the baloony on to the adjoining roofs, he considered would make the building entirely safe.
