CARNIVAL CLOSING NOTES
Saturday afternoon and evening proved fairly good for the Carnival’s business, in spite of the many kept away from town by the forenoon’s threatening weather. The shows began to pull up stakes and pull down tents about 10 o,clock Saturday night Sunday noon they pulled out for Georgetown, Ky„ a very long jump, but they wanted to follow the other sweet birds of the summer time into the warmer region of the Southland. They travel by special train, their route being to Lafayette over the Monon, to Cincinnati over the Big 4, and to Georgetown over the Southern. One of Joe Jackson’s hacks hauled “Big Woolley” as the spieler called him, to the train, and only charged him 10 cents extra for excess weight. A very low charge, considering that three like Willie would make a good load. To the last there were no kicks coming on the quality of the shows, nor any on the deportment and honesty of the show people. Niok Carter’s high dive is a wonderful and dying performance, but was only performed twice during the whole week, and both those times at - night. This was owing to the almost constant high wind, which would have made the the performances too dangerous to be thought of. The bonus raised by the town business men for the free attractions, was SSOO. In view of thejoold and wet weather it is very doubtful if any who contributed would now consider it a profits ole investment. Neither was the carnival any great success from a financial point cf view, for the Castle Hall Association. Their net profits on the whole affair, as now closely estimated will not be over S2OO, But better, vastly better S2OO gained by giving the people a meritorious entertainment like this, free from all disgraceful and demoralizing features, than ten times that sum if tainted by immoral and vulgar exhibitions and swindling games and dishonest practices.
